TRICARE Reserve Select Supplement Insurance
If you are a member of the National Guard or Ready Reserve, you may be eligible for the TRICARE Reserve Select Supplement.
TRICARE Reserve Select (TRS) is a premium-based health plan that qualified National Guard and Reserve members may purchase. TRS, which requires a monthly premium, offers coverage similar to TRICARE Standard and Extra.

Key features of TRS include:
- Available worldwide to most Selected Reserve members (and families) when not on active duty orders or covered under the Transitional Assistance Management Program.
- Must qualify for and purchase TRS to participate.
- Freedom to manage your own health care; no assigned primary care manager. Visit any TRICARE-authorized provider or qualified host nation provider (if located overseas).
Network providers not available overseas.
- No referrals are required, but some care may require prior authorization.
- May receive care in a military treatment facility (MTF) on a space-available basis only.
- Offers comprehensive health care coverage including TRICARE's prescription drug coverage.
The TRICARE Reserve Select Supplement pays 80% of all covered expenses in excess of the TRICARE allowed amount, not to exceed the legal limit – after the TRICARE deductibles are met.
You can purchase the TRICARE Reserve Select Supplement plan at any time throughout the year as long as you are eligible for TRICARE Reserve Select.
No specific period of coverage – coverage is effective unless terminated or you are not eligible for the TRS program.

Eligibility to purchase TRICARE Reserve Select is determined by the personnel offices of the Service or Reserve Component. RC members may be eligible to purchase TRICARE Reserve Select for themselves and their immediate family members if they:
- Were called or ordered to active duty in support of a contingency operation, as defined in section 101(a) (13) (B) of Title 10, United States Code, for more than 30 consecutive days on or after September 11, 2001.
- Served continuously on active duty for 90 days or more under those orders. The length of time served determines the maximum period of coverage offered under TRS.*
- Enter an agreement to serve in the Selected Reserve.
* RC members who are otherwise eligible, but did not serve continuously on active duty for 90 days under those orders due to an injury, illness, or disease incurred or aggravated while activated, may be eligible for one year of TRICARE Reserve Select coverage.
TRS eligibility is determined by the Reserve Component and the RC member’s agreement to service in the Selected Reserve, which is recorded in DEERS-the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System by the Service or Reserve Component unit personnel office.
